Nomenclature of Terminology
The following terminology is used to describe belt conveyors and their components.
| Item Name / Term Used | Function / Description |
| Angle of repose | Angle to the horizontal which a freely formed pile makes when poured from above. |
| Angle of surcharge | Angle to the horizontal which a material assumes win at rest on a moving belt. |
| Head/drive/discharge pulley | To introduce power to the belt; material is discharged over this pulley. |
| Material trajectory | Arc scribed by material discharged over head pulley. |
| Tail pulley | Belt support. |
| Snub pulley | To increase belt angle of wrap around drive pulley. |
| Take-up pulley | Mounted on sliding frame to maintain required tension in belt. |
| Bend pulley | Deflects belt around angles greater than 40 degrees. |
| Feed/loading chute | Contains feed material; centralises load on belt; imparts material velocity in direction of belt travel. |
| Skirt plates | Integral part of feed chute; contains material on belt while accelerating to belt speed. |
| Skirt rubber | Adjustable wearing strips attached to skirt plate; seal between belt and skirt plate. |
| Impact idlers | Closely spaced idlers at load point; supports belt and absorbs impact. |
| Impact bed | Continuous low-friction wearing strip at load point; supports belt and absorbs impact. |
| Transition idlers | Supports belt through transition from flat pulley to full idler trough angle. |
| Troughing/carrying idlers | Supports loaded belt; maintains desired belt profile and required trough angle. |
| Troughing angle | Angle of wing idlers to horizontal viewed in cross-section through carrying side belt. |
| Return idlers | Supports return belt; maintains desired belt profile. |
| Carrying-side/strand belt | Upper or top belt profile which carries transported material. |
| Return-side/strand belt | Lower or bottom belt profile, not usually loaded. |
| Load stream | Material in transit on carrying side of belt. |
| Head/discharge chute | Collects, contains and guides discharged material to downstream equipment. |
| Primary belt scraper | Contact scraper mounted across head pulley; removes product from belt. |
| Secondary belt scraper | Contact scraper mounted after head pulley; removes residual product from belt. |
| Return belt plough | Contact scraper mounted before tail pulley on return belt; prevents material being caught between belt and pulley. |
| Take-up carriage | Structural frame incorporating guides; retains and guides moving take-up assembly. |
| Take-up trolley | Moving structural frame supporting take-up pulley; vertical or horizontal orientation. |
| Belt splice | Method of joining two belt ends; hot or hold vulcanising or mechanical splice. |
| Low speed coupling | Mechanical component connecting gearbox output shaft to pulley shaft. |
| High speed coupling | Mechanical/hydro-mechanical component connecting motor to gearbox input shaft. |
| Reducer/gearbox | Torque converting device connecting drive motor to drive pulley. |
| Drive motor | |
| Baseplate | Structural frame onto which drive motor, gearbox and coupling are mounted. |
| Drive unit | Conveyor drive assembly incorporating motor, gearbox, high and low speed couplings, baseplate. |
| Torque arm | |
| Pulley bearings | Bearing assemblies mounted on pulley shaft. |
| Plummer blocks | Pulley bearing support housings; secures bearings/pulleys to structural support frame. |
| Sole plate | Steel plate with jacking bolts; mounted between Plummer block and support frame; facilitates the alignment of pulley. |
| Head frame | Structural frame supporting drive/head pulley and scrapers. |
| Tail frame | Structural frame supporting tail pulley. |
| Brake unit | Disc or caliper unit mounted on pulley shaft; forced breaking of belt conveyor. |
| Conveyor stringers/support | Light frame supporting carrying and return idlers between head and tail pulleys. |
| Deck plates | Platework mounted on stringers between carrying and return belt; prevents spillage falling on return belt. |
| Foundations | Supports for conveyor stringers, head and tail frames; concrete. |
| Holding down bolts | Anchor bolts cast into foundations; secures stringers to foundations. |
| Dedusting | Forced evacuation of airborne dust in chute is and skirts. |
| Pulley lagging | Rubberised cover applied to pulley; increases friction between belt and pulley. |
| Convex curve | Vertical curve in the conveyor profile. |
| Convex/concave radius | Radius of vertical curve in the conveyor profile. |
| Concave curve | Vertical curve in the conveyor profile. |
| Horizontal radius | Horizontal curve in conveyor - plan view. |
| Belt speed | Maximum continuous belt speed in loaded condition. |
| Material characteristics / properties | Material type, classification, characteristics, behaviour, specification. |
